Basic Regatta Notes
The South Atlantic district kicked off our fall series this weekend with the 60th Annual Old Goat Regatta at Lake Lanier Sailing Club. With 40 boats on the line (several of them veteran thistle sailors), it made for some quite competitive big fleet sailing. We were able to get 3 races off on Saturday in cloudy and gusty storm conditions. Sailors returned to the dock to enjoy wheelbarrow beer, tacos and margaritas, and a blues band on the patio. We woke up Sunday to foggy conditions; however once the fog lifted some breeze filled in and we were able to start a race. In typical Lake Lanier fashion, Race 4 on Sunday started off at 7-9kts but ended in a drifter on the last leg. Congratulations to Greg Griffin and team for remaining consistent and winning the regatta! The Southeast Fall series continues in 2 weekends with the Wild Turkey regatta in Savannah. See everyone there!
Clean Regatta Notes
We did our best this year to keep the Old Goat a clean regatta. We didn’t print SIs, we requested competitors bring reusable cups for drinks and offered water refill stations, and we had special bins for cans and other recyclables. Next year our goals are to continue to reduce plastic usage (especially at meal time) and find a more “green” solution for our wheelbarrow beer after racing tradition.
