Atlantic Coast Championship

Fleet 41 is looking forward to welcoming everyone to NBC for some challenging sailing on the Hudson River!

We are pleased to announce that this event will be a Clean Regatta, in support of the TCA’s Clean Class Initiative.

A few important notes for competitors in this regard:

No sailing instructions will be printed (they are posted here, please bring from home if you want a hard copy)
Please bring your refillable water bottles – we have a bottle filler at the club.
Bring your own dishware, if you can.  (Beer mug, coffee cup, plates/silverware)  We will have limited re-usable items on hand from the club.
Non-toxic boat wash only (for those using soap)
Please make sure to use reef-safe sunscreen!

For those who haven’t been here, it’s a great spot for racing – our sailing area is the Tappan Zee (widest part of the Hudson River) – a 2.5 mile wide section of river east to west, and about 4 miles north to south.  When we get the typical summer southerly thermal, it feels like big water sailing with 10-15 degree shifts and fairly steady velocity out of the south.  Northerlies usually mean puffy breeze and chop.  Westerlies feel like lake sailing with big velocity changes and shifts to keep you on your toes!  We don’t talk about Easterlies, because they don’t happen …and of course, there’s the current, which can run up to 2 knots north and south, to keep things interesting!  One big plus is that even at the height of summer, we don’t get a lot of powerboat chop, or traffic in our racing area.  And it’s only a 5-10 minute sail from the hoist to the course!

It’s easy to get here – the club is right off exit 10 or 11 of the New York State Thruway, depending where you’re coming from.  Club is located here.  Club website is at https://www.nyackboatclub.org  We are about 4 hours from Annapolis, and 3 hrs from Newport, RI.

We are planning a great event, with lots of racing, a catered dinner, local craft beer- and of course the charms of the river village of Nyack just outside the club gates, with all of the local bars to entertain those with energy left on Saturday night!
We have a bonus event happening on Friday afternoon 6/24 – Olympian Caleb Paine (Finn Class Olympic bronze medalist, Americas Cup competitor, 2017 Rolex Yachtsman of the year) is giving a free presentation from 4-6pm for those who roll in early!  Caleb will also be hanging out during the event on Saturday.

Limited housing with our local fleet members is available – please reach out ASAP if you are interested.  There are also several hotels close by — Hotel Nyack is a cool upscale spot with a nice bar, and pool – just up the hill from the club. West Gate Inn is a more budget – oriented hotel, also right in the village of Nyack.

Registration will be online only, to facilitate use of Yachtscoring and expedite trophies on Sunday so travelers can get on the road asap after racing.  Please register early to make our lives easier planning the event!  We need to put our order in with the caterer on June 20th (Monday), so it would be greatly appreciated if folks could let us know they are coming by then.  We don’t want any sailors to go hungry!

Look forward to seeing a bunch of you in June!
