2023 Amendment Proposal 3:

Increase Jib Halyard Tensioner to 8:1

Submitted by Fleet #155, Research Triangle Thistle Fleet (12 of 14 fleet members voted in support)

Proposal to change Specifications, Chief Measurer’s Rulings, and Parts and Materials Article VI SPARS to increase the maximum mechanical advantage of the jib halyard tensioner to 8:1.

Current Language:

Specifications, Chief Measurer’s Rulings, and Parts and Materials Article VI SPARS reads: Jib Halyard tensioning devices shall be limited to a 4:1 mechanical advantage.

Proposed Language:

Specifications, Chief Measurer’s Rulings, and Parts and Materials Article VI SPARS to read: Jib Halyard tensioning devices shall be limited to a 8:1 mechanical advantage.

Advantages to TCA:

  • Makes the boat easier to sail for smaller forward crew.
  • Smaller sailors cannot pull the jib halyard tight enough in heavy winds.  The higher mechanical advantage would help this issue.
  • This modification does not give any sailor a speed advantage over another sailor.
