2023 Amendment Proposal 2:

Allow Hiking Line

Submitted by Fleet #155, Research Triangle Thistle Fleet (12 of 14 fleet members voted in support)

Proposal to change Specifications, Chief Measurer’s Rulings, and Parts and Materials Article XIV: Hiking Aids Paragraph 1 to allow for a hiking line.

Current Language:

Specifications, Chief Measurer’s Rulings, and Parts and Materials Article XIV: Hiking Aids Paragraph 1 states: Hiking Straps – Length and location optional providing they do not violate Measurer’s Rulings No 10 and 11.  Hiking straps are to be used to hold the feet, ankles, or shins.  Use as hand holds, at any time is illegal (CMR 42).

Proposed Language:

Specifications, Chief Measurer’s Rulings, and Parts and Materials Article XIV: Hiking Aids Paragraph 1 to read: Hiking Straps – Length and location optional providing they do not violate Measurer’s Rulings No 10 and 11.  Hiking straps are to be used to hold the feet, ankles, or shins.  Use of hiking straps as hand holds, at any time is illegal.  Use of a hiking line, attached along the centerline of the boat, which does not extend beyond the hull of the boat, is allowed, only as a hand hold, for crew. (CMR 42)

Advantages to TCA:

  • Makes the boat easier to sail
  • Many forward crews do not have any line (jib sheet, vang, etc) to aid when hiking.  This would allow these forward crews to have such an aid
  • This proposed change does not provide a speed advantage to any one sailor over another

PRO Comments: TBD

CON Comments:

  • Adds more clutter to the boat.
