Three final races on Saturday, for the last day of the 2014 Thistle Midwinter West Championship. Scores were tight among the top three, which would lead to some excitement!
The first race was a Course 2, double windward leeward. A strong battle between Paul Abdullah's team with Collin Leon and Marie Thompson and Allan Terhune's team with Katie Terhune and Samantha Parisi. The wind was what the MWW veterans were used to with 8-12 knots, big swell and big chop between the swell. Paul's team edged Allan's team with Mike Ross's team finishing 3rd.
This put Paul's team .5 up on Allan. The 2nd race was a Course 4, which is a modified triangle course. At the top mark Allan led with Downing Nightengale's team from Jacksonville in 2nd and Paul's team in 3rd. All three teams sailed rumb line on the first reach and subsequently missed the offset, which was outlined in the SIs. The result is that all three teams, which went on to a strong race, had to retire afterward. This put the defending champs from MBYC, David Tillson, Eric Heim and John Fretwell comfortably in the lead going into the last race.
The last race was back to a Course 2. Allan's team cruised to victory with Paul's team 2nd and David's team 3rd, sealing the overall victory. Ken Lane's team with Laura Bolin and Phil Gordon finished 4th in that last race to finish up strong.
Congrats to David, Eric and John for successfully defending their title.
Sunday is the Larry Klein Memorial Match Race, which always yields great, exciting racing.
