Junior Sailors Racing at Thistle Nationals

On Chautauqua Lake on Friday July 21, I-LYA sailors Ryan Squires, Luke Schumann, Bryn Irvine, Ethan and Will Taylor and Barrett Hall participated in a Thistle clinic with Mike Ingham of North Sails.  Less than 24 hours before, Ethan, Will and Barrett were presented with the trophy as winners of the I-LYA Junior Championship in their Thistle.

Mike Ingham has won over 25 national and continental championships in multiple one-design classes. Mike has a passion for sharing with others through coaching and writing. He was recently named 2017 Coach of theYear by US Sailing for his work with the Paralympic team in earning a World Championship at 2016 Holland Worlds and a Silver Medal at the Rio Games. Mike is currently coaching the U.S. Olympic hopefuls looking to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The Clinic took place the day before Thistle Junior Nationals, at which Ryan, Luke and Bryn placed second after a tiebreaker for first. Skipper Bryn Clark of the Otsego Sailing Club won the four-boat fleet, which also included I-LYA Skipper JJ Miller. "Competing against the guys from the OSC of the Niagara Frontier was fun, and I encourage all I-LYA sailors to challenge yourself in national regattas," said Ryan Squires, 17, of Hoover Sailing Club, where he is assistant coach of the junior race team.  Ryan, Luke and Bryn won the Area E Sears Cup Qualifier and will compete at the U.S. Sailing Chubb Junior Championship for the Sears Cup at Tom's River, N.J., August 8-11, to be sailed in Flying Scotts.  The I-LYA Yachtsman Fund provided financial support through a grant to all three youth sailors to sail for the Sears Cup.  Support the Yachtsman Fund with your donation:
